Hi there. Thank you so much for your great music. Your new album almost blew me away. It is a kind of revelation that I haven't had for years. How is this possible?
Haha, thank you!!!! Nice words!!!! Well, I´d say we have already taken your soul, hahahaha….
Do you care for the opinion of your fans, the press and people in general? Or is it just you and your music?
We don´t give a shit about what somebody else says as long as we´re working on an album. When we write songs, all that counts are the opinions of the five of us. But when we finally release an album of course we care about the reactions we get – and as long as they are as good as your reaction nobody has to be afraid of the wolves, haha….
I bet that some of our readers have never heard about you. Please give us a short briefing in the band's biography.
First of all, there´s our singer Attila Dorn, coming from Romania. He´s studied classical opera vocals in Bucharest and then got infected by metal music and joined Powerwolf. Then there´s my brother Charles and me (Matthew) who founded the band. We´re playing music together since a lot of years. Finally there´s organ player Falk Maria Schlegel and drummer Stefane Funebre.
We met Attila on hoidays on Romania about a year ago and a few weeks later he travelled to Germany to join the band – I´d say that this was something like the birth of Powerwolf.
What is the message of "Return in bloodred"?
Heavy Fucking evil Metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next to the opener my favourite is "Lucifer in starlight". Can you tell us something about this song and it's history?
It´s a very proud song, almost like a battle hymn, very heroic and pathetic. We started with that very doomy mail riffing and then Attila added the vocal lines and it just worked perfectly. I remember that we wrote this song in just one very intense hour in our rehersal room, and when we left the rehersal room there was a summer storm going on outside, which almost felt like a sign….
And what about "We came to take your souls"?
This is our battle cry – you better believe it man!!!! Hahaha….
What will you do with our souls if you have them?
The souls become a part of the wolftribe. The tribe is constantly growing with every singe soul we take. The tribe is something like a strong bond between us and our fans – we share the same passion for great metal music, and that´s what the metal scene is about, isn´t it?
Is "The evil made me do it" a Doom Song?
That´s up to you. If you say that for you it´s a doom song, then it´s a doom song, if you´d say that it sounds like black metal to you – fine as well…. But honestly: we don´t care about if something we write is doom, power, speed, rock´n´roll or whatever. But you´re right, “the evil made me do it” is quite influenced by Black Sabbath. There is no band that´s more heavy and more evil than early black Sabbath, and this song is something like our tribute to the ones who invented the dark side of metal!
Which one is YOUR favorite song from the album and why?
“We came to take your souls” – as it says everything about Powerwolf.
Your lyrical inspirations are obvious. What do they mean to you?
Attila spends a lot of time reading books about ancient Romanian history and legends and for him this is something very serious and essential. For him wolves, were wolves and vampires are not just horror creatures. We west euopran people know these creatures and stories from the typical horror movies, but being Romanian Attila sees these things from a different point of view. He hates all these movies because as he says they don´t tell the truth, they make cheap horror sensations out of traditional stories that mean a lot to Romanian people. So Attila sees his lyrics as a channel to deliver a Romanian point of view on these things.
How would you describe your own music?
Well, I think that´s up to you journalists. That´s what you get paid for, haha….
Paid for? Who gets paid for what? Well, maybe I should think this over…
What are your musical influences in your opinion?
If I had to give you the sort list: Black Sabbath and Mercyful Fate. Both are essential and the best bands ever for me and I think they had a big influence on our way of writing songs. If I had to give you a complete list of all the great bands that have influenced me in any way it would surely take more place than you have to print the whole interview, haha… I´m a metal addict since more than 15 years now and you can believe that I´ve gathered quite a lot of records over the years….
How do you create your sound?
We write everything together. We don´t work like most bands obviously do. We don´t plan our music, we don´t sit down and elaborate our riffs and vocal lines. In Powerwolf, songs must “happen” – which means we write our songs quite spontaneously. Someone has a basic idea and then we start playing. Often it happens that we write a song in not more than half an hour. It needs a certain magic, which you can´t invoke or plan, it just has to happen. “We came to take your souls” for example is a song we´ve written in the very first rehersal we did together with Attila. We had that riff and Attila came up with the chorus line, someone added the song title and half an hour later the song was ready – that´s how we work and that´s what makes Powerwolf something almost spiritual and magical for me.
Which equipment do you use?
Speaking for me I can tell you that on the album I recorded almost everything with my beloved Gibson les paul custom from 78 – the hell of a guitar! For amplification I used both an Engl one and a peavey 5150 – combined they sound huge!
Please name some lately released CDs that you like to listen to at home.
Actually I love the new Soilwork album and the new Paradise lost album – at least these are the new album I like. Apart from that I need my daily dose of Black Sabbath!!!!
What makes the difference between Powerwolf and other Heavy Metal bands?
I don´t know. You should be able to judge that. For me personally what makes Powerwolf something very special is the unique atmosphere we create when we´re together as a band. I´d almost call it a magical atmosphere. Attila brought a lot of spirit and passion into the band, and this is something that goes far beyond the music we write. I think people can hear that on the album.
What about the Metal Scene in general? Do you know some bands, and if so, is there friendship, rivalry or more or less nothing special?
We don´t care about other bands. We do what we want to do with Powerwolf.
How important is it for you to play live on stage?
There´s nothing better than being on stage sharing our passion for metal with the fans!
Please tell us something about further Live activities.
First of all we´ll present ourselves on some Summer festivals, such as the Summer breeze in Germany. For autumn we plan to play a full tour, but there´s nothing confirmed yet. We don´t want to jump on the first tour we might get offered, as we want to make sure the the conditions are good enough to deliver a good show. We will rather not play any tour at all than ending up on an eight band package tour, where each band gets kicked on stage for some 20 minutes without any stage show and concept. For us the visual presentation is very important and we want our fans to get a good show, and we want to make sure to be able to deliver what our fans deserve – but I´m quite confident that around autumn the call of the powerwolf will be heard on many stages across Europe!!!!
What do you think about Metal Web Magazines?
I prefer them to printed ones in the meantime. Simply because they’re more actual. If something happens in the scene, I can read it on the web on the same day. Four weeks later I can then read the “news” in a printed mag…. Well, but of course it´s great to have both of them…
Is there something that you have never been asked but always have been eager to say?
We are looking forward seeing you on tour. Best whishes to you all. Any last words?
Vive le vrai métal!!!!!!!!!!
