Congratulations for “Let The Madness Begin”! As it is your first album, please outline the history of the band from 1994 on…
Thanx for your congratulations! Well the band was founded on august 1994 in Rome by Francesco Cremisini and its monicker was “Scapegoat”. As Scapegoat we recorded and released several unofficial demo-tape and an official one in 1998 titled “Scars”. It was reviewed on the main Italian metal magazines as “Top Demo Of The Month”!
After line-up changes, in 1999, we decide to change the monicker of the band from Scapegoat to Enemynside . As Enemynside we released a new demo-cd in ’99 titled “From The Cradle To The Way” (“Top Demo of The Month” on Metal Hammer and Psycho!) and a promo-cd in 2001 titled “Violent Beats” (“Top Demo of The Month” on Metal Hammer and Metal Shock).
After many contacts with indie labels we decided to sign for Temple Of Noise records that last October released our first full length album.
Have there been any drastic changes in your music?
No, I’ don’t think so. We have started to play heavy/thrash metal in the vein of Megadeth “Countdown To Exctintion” era, with many classic heavy metal influences. Then we have speeded-up our songwriting because we have found the right drummer that allowed us playing fast songs!
We have had many problems with the drummers in the past and it hasn’t been simple for us to find a drummer able to play fast songs like “Speed Killing” or “Suddenly Mad”.
What was the reason of changing the bandname from Scapegoat to Enemynside?
Unfortunately there are too much bands called Scapegoat in Italy and abroad, so we have thought to change the monicker once for all in 1999 and start to release demos/promos/albums with the new monicker.
Last but not least I love the meaning of “enemy inside”, it represents the obstacles, the fear and the states of paranoia that everyone hide inside themselves....
So why did you choose Enemynside and not Enemy Inside or Enemyside?
Because we believe in the one-word-monicker because it sounds more “in your face”! Enemynside is a monicker created by mixing two existing words, “Enemy” and “Inside” to create a single word that doesn’t exist in the dictionary. So if other bands will use the same two words for the name of their band it will be more difficult that they will use our same idea for mixing them in “Enemynside”! Surfing on the web we have discovered a death metal band named “Enemy Inside”! If we had chosen to use these two words without mixing them in this particular mode now we have had to change our monicker again!
Provocative question: Due to the many changes in the band’s history (you listed 10 former members): Is the core of the band only Francesco and Matteo?
We are the main songwriters of the band, so the Enemynside music style is an outcome of our ideas. We have never had other songwriters in the band…..
There are several old songs on your album. How did you selected the older material? Songs from each period or simply the best?
The older songs are “Bad Junks” written by Francesco in 1991 and rearranged for the album and “Scars” written by me in 1998. The other songs were written between 1999 and 2001.
The idea was that this album should be compound by speed songs so we have chosen the fastest songs written in the latest years except for “Scars” (one of our fans favourite songs) and “Bad Junks” (our favourite piece for years).
Tell me a bit about your label….Frontiers isn’t notorious for Thrash Metal, but for AOR and Hard Rock releases….
Yes I know that Frontiers is notorious for hard rock releases but when the boss of the label listened to our album he said it was great music!
Are you already planning a successor after the good reactions to the album?
We are working hard to the songs for the second album because we would like to record a true thrash metal masterpiece! We have already written and completed 5 songs, four of them are speed songs and the other one is more experimental. We are planning to record the album next February or March and we’ll record it in a notorious recording studio here in Italy. There will be about 9 songs on the album and we are working to have some special guests on it….stay tuned!
I overlooked your press section on your homepage. It seems you have an enormous popularity in Italy. What are your future plans to promote your music outside your country? What steps will you take?
We are planning some live shows in Slovenia (first of all there will be the one at Metal Dose Fest next 14 of August) and then we’ll try to book other live shows in Greece and Austria for next October/November.
Unfortunately we don’t know promoters or booking agencies in your country, so if there is someone interested in our band please write to firstname.lastname@example.org
I assume the METAL DOSE open air in Slovenia in August will be your career highlight. What are you expecting of this Open Air?
We are proud to be part of the Metal Dose fest with such great bands (Tankard in primis). We have already been in Slovenia and I know there are a lot of thrash metal maniacs there! We’ll be back for them to teach them a real lesson in violence! :)
When will you teach Germans in a lesson in violence?
I hope as soon as possible! We have to get in touch with some local promoters before!
At least in Germany it seems like Thrash Metal is becoming more and more popular in Italy. Is there any reason or are you fed up with Power Metal?
Ahahahha, our people fed up with Sanremo Festival shit! I don’t know why Italian metal kids are so receptive with power metal……maybe because of its melodies…..maybe here in Italy we prefer the melodic stuff because of the roots of our Italian melodic music…
I hope Thrash Metal will rise again, because I don’t like Stratovarius and their clones!
Explain your attitude towards heavy metal music, especially Thrash! Would you agree Jeff Waters had a big influence on the music of the band?
Our main influence has been the Bay Area thrash metal scene of the ’80! We love Annihilator too but our musical roots are in Frisco! For me thrash metal is not only a kind of music but it is my lifestyle! It has been my lifestyle for years, I never changed it! It is in my DNA!
You already had some articles in the Italian issues of Metal Hammer and Rock Hard. So how does it feel to be found in such magazines? Is it like a confirmation for the hard work?
Yes, I think so but we have worked hard for the band in these years and I think we’ve got less than what we deserve!
You may finish the interview with the final words…
Thanx for your support and I hope we’ll meet someday in Germany in the next future. Meanwhile for all of you thrash metal kids, try to visit www.enemynside.com and download our mp3 in the “Sound” section! You’ll be blown away! :)
