Saxon "A Night Out With The Boys: 09.12.2005 Live In Fulda, Germany"
Just exactly thirteen long years after co-headlining MOTÖRHEAD'S "Bombers And Eagles" tour, SAXON are back again in Fulda to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the NWoBHM. After the soundcheck, while the other members are chilling in the backstage room, I have the chance to ask guitar player Doug Scarrat some questions, dealing with the older days...

Saxon - A Night Out With The Boys: 09.12.2005 Live In Fulda, Germany

Hi Doug, the Germany tour started only a few days ago. Are you satisfied with the feedback that you get from the german fans?

Yeah, I mean this is the second part of the "Back to the 80's" tour, so I haven't really heard much feedback of this little bit so far. But a few weeks ago, when we started, it was really good, I think, we had lots of postings on the website. People were having a lot of fun with SAXON and that's great, man.

I got the setlist from the gig three days ago in Hannover, where you only played songs from the first five albums. Do you want to say "Thanks for all" especially to the old fans, just 'cause you concentrate on the years 1979 to 1984?

Yeah, I think so and even it's fun, changing the setlist and doing the old songs. Mostly songs that I have never played before with SAXON, yeah, it's good, it's quite fun for me.

So it must be a great feeling for you to play the old songs?

It's great fun at the moment, because Nigel is back in the band, you know, my first link to SAXON was through Nigel, because we live very close. I played in local bands with Nigel before and when they sacked Graham, Nigel was the first person to contact me to ask if I was interested in the job. So I enjoy the tour very much, because I can play with Nigel again and that's great fun, you know.

How was the situation for metal bands in Great Britain in the older days, when the NWoBHM started?

It's actually a bit difficult for me to answer that, because I wasn't in the band in the eighties, you know. I was basically a session guitar player. But yeah, I remember the NWoBHM obviously, although I was doing something completely different this time. I remember the massive impact I had and SAXON obviously was a band I really liked from then. But not only SAXON, I liked IRON MAIDEN, MOTÖRHEAD and JUDAS PRIEST in the same way. It was a kick-off, you know, everything seemed to happen very fast. Within a year rock and metal was back in a massive way.

Can you tell me something about the ups and downs in the history of SAXON, concerning the time you have been in the band?

Yeah, of course, we have been up and down pretty much. You know, since when I joined the band, from the "Dogs Of War" album really I think. England was a bit difficult, seemed to take longer to catch up. You know, rock music and heavy metal was not very popular in England five years ago. It's definately a lot of interest there, especially in the older bands as well. The interest hasn't really gone down actually, all of the albums have been good for us.

Are you proud of the fact that SAXON has influenced so many other bands?

Yeah, of course, definately. It's great if you know that you have influenced others, you know, we only write songs, so it's great when people say that.

What was the most important SAXON album for you?

For me it was "Unleash The Beast" really, because it was the first album where I collaborated in the songwriting. You know, I joined on the "Dogs Of War" tour, so I was in the band for maybe a year and a half or more, before I had anything to do with writing any songs with the band. So "Unleash The Beast" was very important for me, because I was the new guy, haha. And I am very proud of "Lionheart", I must say, "Lionheart" is a great record.

Yeah, for sure. Do you listen to actual trendy music like nu metal or metalcore? Do you know some bands in these genres?

A bit. I like music generally, you know, I like different forms of rock music as well, but I don't really like the kind of the very black metal stuff. I don't say it's not good generally, but for me it's not good. I like modern metal bands, for example LINKIN' PARK. As a guitar player I like JOE SATRIANI, STEVE VAI, ZAKK WYLDE and I like RAMMSTEIN as well.

And now we come to something completely different: what do you think about the chances of the English football team at the FIFA worldcup next year in Germany?

Haha, man, you're asking the wrong guy, you should better ask Nigel or Nibbs. I'm gonna watch the worldcup, but I have no interest in football at all, haha.

Okay Doug, thanks for the interview and keep on rocking.

Yeah, thanks. And good luck with Metalglory.
