very happy are those days when I can hold a new record of yours in hands. And this new record is, once again, a very special one. "Embrace The Storm" sounds very unique, and the reason for this is the unusal way you went to found the band and to write the music. Rumors go that your bandmates live in different countries and continents, and that the songwriting process went on by sending millions emails around the world. But step by step. Let's take a look at the beginning. When and how did the idea appear to start "Stream Of Passion"?
When I first met, heard and saw Marcela when she came over for The Human Equation I was overwhelmed by her talent and charisma. I think I already knew back then that I wanted to explore further musical adventures with her.
You found your bandmembers in very different ways. If I'm right, first there was Marcela (voc. & violin), who brought her boyfriend Alejandro (piano) with her, Davy (drums) was the winner of a competition that you organized at your homepage,
Yes, but it wasn´t a drum competition.
Lori (guit.) you found in the cyberspace and Johan (bass) joined you by some kind of recommendation (oh wow, how usual (-; that's nearly boring). Why did you chose to go such an unusal way, or better, where does such ideas originate from?
I wanted to do something different than Ayreon, so no famous musicians with lots of experience this time.
Did you have detailed ideas how the sound of the band should be?
Not at all. It sort of developed as we went along.
How and where did the songwriting process take place?
Everyone wrote/arranged their own parts in the comfort of their own homes. I came up with the basic chords myself, and Marcela wrote the lyrics.
Did the whole band meet for the recordings, or travelled a big bunch of the final soundfiles via cyberspace to your studio?
Most of it through cyberspace. Bass, rythmguitar, drums and piano were recorded in Holland. We all met only after the recordings were finished.
Who came up with the band's name "Stream Of Passion"? Is there a deeper meaning behind it?
It's a line from the lyrics of the song Passion. It's about the love for music that's flowing through our veins.
You call "Stream Of Passion" a band, not a project. Are you serious?
Well, we did a tour, right? ;-)
Will there be another record, even if there was no big commercial success with "Embrace The Storm"?
I never plan ahead too far, so only time will tell.
Yippppiieeeeee!!! Is it true, you will go touring? And there you will play Ayreon songs, too?
Oh yes, half the set were Ayreon tracks.
What do we have to expect? Will you go on stage with two different bands?
No, we will cover the Ayreon songs as Stream of Passion.
Will there be a circus like "Star One" (one of my most favorite live recordings EVER)? Please, tell us some details.
No, this show was much more intimate.
Why it is a rare event to see you on the stage? Don't you need the money you could earn by playing livegigs more often?
Playing live is actually quite expensive if you do it well, with a good crew and such. But touring just isn't my thing. The playing itself and meeting the fans is great of course, it's the waiting and traveling I don't like.
Do you have plans? What can we expect from you next? Will it be a new "Star One" record? Any facts yet?
No, as I said I never plan ahead. So who knows?
Dear Arjen, thank you so very much for answering my questions. Please do some heavy songs on tour. If you do so, I will bang some fresh winds in your direction. See ya there b y h Marc.
Well Marc, I hope you were there, we played plenty of heavy stuff! Tschuss, Arjen.
