Hi Johann, how are you? Last year in January during the tour with Pain one of our “Metalglory-Member” Chris already did a detailed interview with you. You already told him that you planed a new DVD; the reason why we do now this interview! Maybe now you can tell us some news about your plans for the next time and what has happened in the last month in the “Church of Tiamat”?
Basically we’re trying to focus all our strenght on writing, recording and releasing a new album! That’s the main priority at the moment, though we also have a few festivals in Europe coming up this summer.
Time to talk about the DVD! How was the feeling to present some old stuff on DVD now?
I have no problems with that, I’m proud about this band and what we have been and where we are today! But I’m not a viewer of the DVD, we decided to release this for our fans, not for ourselves.
I noticed with surprise that during the gig in Krakow Peter from Pain/Hypocrisy sang the lyrics for „Sleeping beauty”. He also did in Hanover, however, all members of the touring bands were involved too! How did it come and may it become a so called “ritual” in the future for the gigs?
We always had people from other bands harresing us on stage! We always told them that for us the stage is not a sacred place and we don’t take ourselves too seriously, so therefore we had Anathema or Moonspell coming up on stage joining in wherever they felt for, we had tons of female singers helping us out etc… We’re just trying to have fun!
That´s the point!
How was the feeling in the studio and on stage on the great show in Krakow, do you record some more tracks, which are not finally on the DVD? I think, sound, pictures and design of the show (DVD) are really great and professional. Are you satisfied with the end results? Would you have planed to play more songs that evening. Maybe some of “Astral Sleep” or “Sumerian Cry” – maybe only to complete the gig as a whole HISTORY of Tiamat theme and in some “new” versions?
Maybe your intention is not to play that stuff anymore?
No, we just played a normal show, did our best, business as any day on tour. After that we went back to the bus and got drunk and woke up in another city. I will not judge the show, it’s in the past but I remember we were quite satisfied.
Concerning that part it would be possible to act like Dimmu Borgir for example who recorded the old stuff again - “Stormblast”! Maybe you think about something like this for “Astral Sleep” or “Sumerian cry” – and when not - why?
Everybody knows we’re not interested in doing something like that.
As far as I understand the DVD has been created to present the history of Tiamat as a whole. Do you still have contact with “old” members? Don´t you think that Johnny Hagel for example would also like to say something concerning former days?
We packed the DVD with pretty much all the material we had in order not to rip off our fans. There might be something that has to be said by ex members but for that you need to talk to them.
By the way, does there actually exist any „funny“ or „forbidden“ stuff which could also have found a place on the DVD? Or do you think that stuff is (would be) too private?
Too private, plus I’m not interested in watching my favourite bands doing silly things backstage. I just don’t see the value of such bullshit.
How do you feel in general, when you think about “your baby” and the whole history of Tiamat (also private! –after so many years). Which sentences would you like to say or what should be mentioned-difficulties etc.?
Right now is a very exciting time! We’re looking for a new deal and somehow we have ended a chapter with this DVD. I’m very curious what this will bring as we feel we still have a lot to give!
How was the process to create the coverdesign for the DVD and who did the artwork –since it would be great for tattoos, what do you think?
I designed it. I love doing things like that, getting around interesting places taking photos, scanning garbage and put it together in Photoshop while having a bottle of wine. It’s fun!
What can we expect next from Tiamat, since the release of “Prey” was already in 2003!?
Yeah, it’s really about time to get going, but we’re on it! We’re not very fast but you know… The sun is shining, beer is cold and life is good without working or playing music too. Sometimes you just need to allow yourself a little leeway.
Please do some „brainstorming“ – what do you think about the following topics; just in few words(?):
gloomiest man in rock.
Swedish Death Metal:
Entombed and studio Sunlight.
don’t know much about it.
Gepäckausgabe, Morgenlatte, Vielfrass...
cuddly, furry little creatures with horns.
Deutschland sucht den Superstar - Show / The Idol –the show:
I haven’t been watching these shows, for some unexplainable reason I always had something better to do.

equally great source of information as of undisputable trash.
Thank you very much for the answers, you last words for this interview to the readers?!
Hope to see you on tour and good luck!
Thank you very much! Take care!!!
