Hevein "The New Gothic Metal Style From Finland!"

Hevein - The New Gothic Metal Style From Finland!

Hi there, how are you. Congratulations to your great first album. Please describe the reactions to the CD so far. It would be released 16.06.06, but the album was done a long time ago - I mean last year?, isn´t it?
Thank you very much. Yes the album was released in Finland almost a year ago. Most of the feedback has been very positive and we are thrilled that people like it. Even though the album came out almost a year ago I'm just happy it's getting a proper release in Germany. It's another dream come true for me.

Some of our readers may never have heard about you. You released only some Mini-Cds and now the debut album "Sound Over Matter". Please give us a short briefing in the band's biography.
Well when we started playing in 92 it was mainly just a hobby. I started playing music with Al (drummer) in high school and then we moved to a basement and jammed with a few friends. We found Aino (violin) thru a friend and she was interested in joining the band because we already were using keyboards. I didn't want to continue using keyboards (bit difficult playing guitar and keyboards at the same time) so we started looking for another violinist or cellist. And again thru a friend we heard Max was looking for a band to play with. Juha answered an add we put in a music magazine and Janne joined after our bass player Tomi left a few months after we finished Sound Over Matter.

What are the differences between your first songs (may in 1992) until now - the new record- in your opinion?
The difference is huge. But seriously I'll be the first to admit it that we sucked big time in the beginning. The biggest difference is with our 1st album we know what we want to sound like. I think it was a good thing to get rid of all that bullshit with the demos. It took us a long time to find our own sound and I'm proud of what we accomplished during those years of recording demos.

My favourite is "Last Drop of Innocence". Can you tell us something about this song and it's history? That on is like not a typical song of the album, you know what I mean?
Pink Floyd has always been a huge influence on me and I wanted make a song that reminded me of their music. The lyrics were written during the Beslan school siege in Russia. I was so shocked to see innocent children get slaughtered like they did. I hope that never happens again.

Which one is your favourite song from the album and why?
New Hope is my favourite because there is no singing on it. Heh. I just think it a beautiful piece and it always reminds me of the good things in my life, past and present.

And what about the different styles you use on the record? I listen a little bit of Nu Metal like Metal-Core (a lot in tracks like "Break out..", Bleed the day" and "Hold fast"), Speed and of course a lot of Gothic Styles! In my personal opinion is the album not easy to describe/to classify!?!-
I agree, I mean you can't put it into one genre. And I think we developed this sound because we got bored playing just one type of music. At one stage we thought about just sticking to one style but we just got bored with it. It works for some bands but not us. If I was forced to describe it would be „ Melo-thrash and Atmospheric Rock".

Are there some lyrics that are special to you? Tell us something about them.
Well like I said earlier the lyrics to Last Drop of Innocence are quite special to me. Most of the other lyrics are just a form of therapy for me. It helps me deal with shit in my life if I can write it down on paper and use it for a song.

Where do you get your inspirations from? And What are your musical influences in your opinion?
Personal experience and watching the news. I write a lot of music in my head when I'm at work or at home. I also get a lot of inspiration from movies and other bands. Right now Tool, Devin Townsend, Soilwork and Pink Floyd are my biggest influences.

How and why did you choose the album cover? Is there a further meaning behind it? Of course the logo is great too and not typical, who did it?
The only meaning behind the cover is Sound Over Matter. Even if a city is turned to ruin music will live forever. I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but I think it's ok to be cheesy now and then. The logo like the album was done by our drummer Al and I. I come up with the idea and he makes it a reality. He has also done our new flash website with our bass player helping out.

How important is it for you to play live on stage? Is it possible to see you in Germany, next time?
Of course it is very important to play as many gigs as possible. I'm sad to say that we will miss the summer festivals in Europe in 2006 but hopefully we will come and play some club gigs in the autumn.

What did you do at home if you not play in the band? How is your private life in Suomi?
Oh you know normal things. I torture old ladies in my basement quite often and when ever it's possible I burn a few crosses in my local church. I also enjoy playing golf using hamsters and I spend my weekends as a telephone salesperson. If you guessed I watch a lot of Monty Python DVD's… you are right. ;-)

What are the next plans in Hevein?
We are currently writing new material for our next album but first we have to wait and see how the release goes for Sound Over Matter. If it goes well in Germany I was told South America will be next. And of course we want to play as many gigs as possible.

We are looking forward seeing you in Germany. Best wishes to you all. Any last words?
We are dying to come and play in Germany. But because this is our debut album coming out we need the peoples help. So if you want to see us live contact your local rock club or Universal music and tell them how you feel!
