Congratulations for the "The 17th Floor". How has the feedback been so far?
Until now we received in overall very good responses concerning our latest release "The 17th Floor". Especially from you guys!!! ha.
But I have to mention that there are also some reviews that are bad, but they are more or less based on the first release we did of "The 17th Floor". At that time we did not have the support from the record label and we released it (without mastering) independently. So you can say that those bad reviews are due to the sound and not due to bad music! Ha!
We are pleased to hear from so many countries that they really like this album.
Please introduce the band and it's members!
The band started back in 1995 and until now, the basis is not changed! Wouter on guitars, Ruud on drums and myself on bass and vocals. Recently Bart joined in on guitar. But still the songs are created by the aforementioned 3.
which bands had the biggest impact on your sound?
As we are a band of 4, there are lot's of influences. Wouter really likes the melodic Death/Pagan/Viking bands, the other 2 band-members Ruud and Bart are more a fan of the brutal death-metal bands and I am more into the real black-metal stuff. So you see lot's of influences, lot's of different tastes. I think this is the strength of our band, that we as a persons have different styles we listen to, but as a band play the music we like together.
How would you describe your music to a Martian?
We call it "fast melodic-black metal". Some reviewers call it a mix between melodic death and black metal. We prefer the first one. Our message is that in these day's the old human way of living (based on pride, respect ...) is pushed aside by foolish -ideas, mass hysteria, wars based on lies ... This theme is a black-metal based one, so we play black-metal!
Your other recordings are already sold out. Do you plan a re-release?
Yes indeed, the first 3 releases ("In Morpheus Arms", "Odes to our brumal kingdom" and "Solemn Tears") are sold out. Those are demo-tapes made in small amount. Probably some of the songs on them will be re-released, but we are still discussing it. It's possible that with our next release we put in an extra CD- as a bonus- with some older material!
I read you had a female vocalist before?
That's true, but the cooperation stopped some years ago just after the release of our first full length album "Beyond the autumn leaves". At that time we also removed our keyboard-player and wanted to go back to our roots, more aggressive guitar based black-metal!
Are there any other drastic changes in your sound from then to "The 17th floor" ?
You now that when you remove your female-vocalist and keyboard-player and replace them by a guitarist you create a more aggressive and more powerful sound. At that time it was the best decision we made in our history of the band. At this time we feel that we are playing and creating the music we always wanted to. More aggressive and powerful yet melodic and epic!
Which is your favourite song on the album and why? Which song would you describe as your best song ever?
Ho, that's a difficult one. We all really like "M.I.T.T.R.H.E", the last song on the album. It starts acoustic and very epic and then in a few seconds blows you away with lots of speed and melodies! This song gives you the best idea were Signs Of Darkness stands for! This is also the best song until now! But be prepared for the next release!
You already mentioned it: The recordings of "The 17th floor" are dated 2004. Do you already have some new stuff or plans for the next release?
Yes, indeed it's already recorded back in the summer of 2004 and we released it independently in November 2004. Soon after that release we signed in on Trinity Records HK and it was released world wide in 05/2005.
We already have plans for a new release. Maybe early 2007. There are several songs finished: "Terpentine", "From depths to surface" ...
It's again a concept album but we are still working on it!
How did you get in contact with Soni and his label? Did you have any doubts signing to an Asian label?
I just sent an e-mail to several record-labels when we finished and released "The 17th Floor". Soni contacted us quite fast! He asked for the full album and after 3 weeks we decided to work together! Soni really supports the bands on his label and we never doubted his loyalty and work!
How is your Belgian Black/Death scene? How many people attend your concerts?
The Belgian scene is small but very good. I, myself, also play in another band called Absynthium (melodic-death-metal) as a session bass-player. Check out www.absynthium.be
for that! There are several killer bands here: Gorath, Mahlstrom, ..
There are several "Die Hard" fans and you always meet them during concerts so you see that the Belgian seen is small but strong!!
Are you going to play some gigs in Germany?
We really want to do this! Just contact me (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we will arrange something!!
Joris, thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. The final words are for you!
