Hi, Duncan! How are you? The new album of your new project is out, how do you feel?
Hello there. Yeah, I was very relieved to get the album finished and released, after all the time working on it, or at least trying to work on it. It took more than a year to record and mix, a lot longer than I had planned but the obligatory obstacles were there once again. Anyway, its all done now so I can look forwards.
Tell us something, in your own words, about the new album "Madre, Protegenos" (Review online!)?
I guess people who already know my style, and are into that type of thing, will get what its about. As usual I have had the Beavis and Buttheads of this world asking me why it isn't heavy metal etc. It's a nice relaxing album, and it carries a message along with it. Some people understand it, some don't, and that´s fine by me.
What are the differences between your last record with Mick (Antimatter) and your new project ION - in your personal opinion?
The difference is really that I decided to use instruments that I hadn't used previously. Also, that the album was entirely written by me whereas the Antimatter stuff was a joint effort combining both styles of me and Mick.
What was the reason to leave Antimatter?! I think, that the instrumental way of ION is not very different like Antimatter; I mean the slowly and melancholic way is like the same?
I needed a big change, and not just musically. I was trapped in a scene that I didn't belong in, and I still am to an extent. For some reason people relate what I do to modern cliched gothic metal. There is a whole world of music out there, but still even past the teenage years, a lot of people have to relate everything to their self-made image of themselves. Anyway, I had to break the cycle somehow and I did just that. Also, me and Mick had totally different agendas, in both our personal lives and what we wanted from our musical careers. So it was natural for me to make a clean break and try to get my music across to people who are into music first and foremost. Sure there are going to be similarities to what I wrote for Antimatter and now, it is still me who is writing. The biggest difference now is my intent, and the message in my songs.
Are you still in contact with Mick? Any plans or guest-recording-sessions for his new record/album?
Sure, we keep in touch quite often. Guest recording for a band I just left? That would be a bit daft. Maybe we'll do something in the future, who knows?
the reason why I´m asking! Thanks
How was the recording process and which studio you did it with who as a producer?
I recorded most of it myself at a friends studio in Ireland. At first it went well, but then my friend became busy with his own band and it was impossible for me to get access to the studio. I went over to Athens, Greece, and did a session there with my good friend Vangelis Yalamas, Fragile Studios. We got a lot done there and I took it back to Ireland to mix. Also, some people recorded parts themselves and sent them to me. It wasn't so difficult because of all the musicians. If you actually listen to the album you will hear that it is very minimal music. Maybe the list of musicians is deceiving, without actually hearing the songs.
How and why did you choose the album cover? Is there a further meaning behind it, it looks very simple but dark?!?
I chose it as I had a concept for the album. The meaning is obvious. The album is a Spanish translation of 'Mother, Protect Us'. Think about it, and it becomes clear.
Are there some lyrics that are special to you? Tell us something about them.
All of the lyrics are special to me, as I write about where I am at the time of writing. I don't write fantasy lyrics, or cliched stuff to fit within a genre. It's all honest feelings.
Where do you get your inspirations from for the new project?
Lyrically, from my experiences and things that I witness in life, and often my thoughts about this. Musically, I draw influence from all kinds of music.
Please tell us something about (maybe!) further Live activities with ION. Hope too see you here in Germany, soon!?!
I have been talking to people about playing live for over a year now. Still nothing concrete has came up. Hopefully I will start to get serious offers soon. I would like to return to Germany for sure.
We are looking forward seeing you in Germany. Best wishes to you and good luck with your new project. Any last words?
