Hi There! How are things going?
Things are going very well. We're on tour in Europe right now with Ill Nino. We finished the first show yesterday and it was a good start to the Earthsblood record cycle! Thanks so much for the interview!
There were four years between “Earthsblood” and your last record. What happened in the years between?
Well, we were very busy for our last record. We toured for about two years on that record. THis time around we wanted to make a better album than the last one so we took about 4 months to write this record. We also took about 4 months to record the record as well. So in the end we ended up taking a lot longer to make the record than we had originally anticipated. We had some mixing issues as well so the album was pushed back to February instead of coming out in
Oct of 08'.
When did you start writing the new songs for “Earthsblood”?
We started writing earthsblood in July 2007. We finished writing around Feb of 08.
Was it easy to write new songs after the big success of “IV: Constitution Of Treason”?
It was a bit more difficult because we wanted to write a much better album. Also, Constitution was a very deep record lyrically so we wanted to step back and see if we can simplify our message a bit. We moved to using 7 strings which really helped with our overall creativity and helped in making the songs a bit longer. I am happy with the writing of the new record because I felt we did some different things than we had before.
Why you changed your vocals? I think the clean parts sounds often like Warrel Dane and Nevermore. What do you think?
I don't think the cleans sound like Warrel! He is a MUCH BETTER singer than I am. It's flattering though because Warrel is a great singer and he chooses very interesting melodies! The vocals changed because the music changed. We don't make conscious decisions to change our vocals or music. They happen naturally. I'm happy this album took the turn that it did!
Since your first record you never changed any member in GOD FORBID. How do you make this happen?
We had a lot of problems earlier in our band and we had some people leave. We felt that it really messed with the vibe of what God Forbid was. I think it has more to do with Loyalty than anything else but we decided sometime in 2003 that we would not kick anyone out. If we did kick someone out then it wouldn't be called God Forbid. The only way we would continue with out a member is if they left of their own accord and gave us their blessing to continue. Even that thought alone would be a hit to the band and our synergy.
GOD FORBID is one of the “fathers” of the NWoAHM. What are your feelings about this?
This is another flattering note. I didn't know we helped create any type of "new" metal. I don't think that we did anything differently than other successful bands. I guess we just came out at the right time for their to be a "resurgance" in metal. At the time we came out heavy music was littered with 3rd and 4th generation Korn rip-offs. I'm a fan of Korn but they changed heavy music in a way that allowed for aggressive, fast and guitar solo metal to be at the forefront again. I think it's nice to be mentioned with other bands in being influential to a new crop of bands!
What do you think about the NWoAHM scene today? What changed, what is still good and what sucks?
I don't really know what the NWOAHM scene is to be honest. I always looked at the scene as metal. I've never agreed with labeling our music because we do so many different things. As far as the metal scene is concerned, I believe it is kicking strong. Over here in Europe it's always been great and I don't think it will suffer. I believe in the USA it will take a big hit once Obama is in office for a couple of years. We need to get our success now or NEVER!
Will you be touring in Europe this year? Maybe some bigger festivals in Germany?
We will be touring Europe. We're here now with Ill nino!!! We're playing in Germany in the next couple of days! Also, we are playing With Full Force Festival and we are overly excited for this. We've never had a chance to play in front of the big crowds in Europe so as a band we feel we are moving forward!
Do you have plans for new songs or maybe new songs written yet?
You should look out for "Bat The Angels". War Of Attrition and Empire Of The Gun! Maybe we'll throw in a couple more if the new album becomes more successful!!!
Thank you for your time. The last words are yours!
I'd like to thank Metal Glory for spreading the Metal Glory all over God Forbid! Thank you to the fans who support the site and GF. Also, check out www.dluxnyc.com there is a Coyle Bros jean coming out! You'll love it!
