Hi there. Congratulations to your great new album. Please describe the reactions to the CD so far.
the reaction has been very positive and people are enjoying the album, which is always a good thing.
Do you care for the opinion of your fans, the press and people in general? Or is it just you and your music?
yes ofcourse, i love to get the response from fans and their likes and dislikes, for the most part you cant take
every single opinion into consideration, but there is usually grand picture and that is always a good key takeaway.
Some of our readers may never have heard about you. Please give us a short briefing in the band's biography.
the bandis made up of christian and myself from fear factory and jon and pat from threat signal, the music for
this album was originally intended for the next fear factory record, so it has alot of the ingredients iof fear factory,
but jon howards vocals really separate it from being fear factory.
Was there a moment when you realized that "Years In The Darkness" would become something special?
when we were doing pre-production on the record, and finalzing the music beforre we record, i noticed that all
the songs were very solid and it felt like this album was going to be more than just another album.
What is the message of "Years In The Darkness"?
the term years in the darkness was already the name of the one of the songs on the album, and we liked it enough
to call the record by the same name, i dont know if there is technicaly a message behind it but i think it is a term
that people can relate to.
My favourite is "Black Ocean". Can you tell us something about this song and it's history?
blac ocean is a great song, it is one of my favorites, that song was written after we knew that we were doing a new
projec t, so this is one of the actual arkaea tracks. the bridge that we wrote for that song was actually pat of a different
song and when we were trying to write the bridge part to the song, we had though fo taking it from the other track we were
working on and the song was pretty much complete.
And what about "Awakening"?
awakening was originally written as a fear factory song, but we only had a verse and chorus part, the bridge to that song
came later, this also the feastest songon the record at 260 bpm.
Which one is your favorite song from the album and why?
my favorite song at the moment is war within, i really like the chorus ont he song and the heavy bridge part, it stands out
since it is more groove oriented.
How and why did you choose the album cover? Is there a further meaning behind it?
we wanted something that had a cinematic feel to it, almost like beuaty and tragedy in one. when this cover started to
evolve, it made even more sense that the title "years in the darkness" would be even more fitting, there wasnt a predisposed
meaning, but it album cover does fit the album title.
Are there some lyrics that are special to you? Tell us something about them.
i like jon's lyrics very much, and i think the song years in the darkness has a special meaning to me in the sense that
is has to do with regret and realization, and i think that is something that is close to most people.
Where do you get your inspirations from?
i am very inspired by my previous works, i am inspired in the sense that i try to top what i have dne in the past and do it better.
What about the recording process of your new album? Any stories or curiosities to report?
the recording process was awesome, we recorded the record at my recording studio, so there was no real pressure and we
tookour time to make this record sound the best that it possibly could. nothing really curious to report since the recording
prcess went very smoothly.
How would you describe your own music?
i would describe our music as very epic yet very heavy, and also very precise.
How do you create your sound? Which equipment do you use?
i create my music on a drum machine, i use the akai mpc1000 and i also create my music on my drums as well, i use a tama
starclassic, i also use zildjian cymbals, pro-mark drum sticks, dw pedals and remo drum heads.
Please tell us something about the process of songwriting.
most of the music is generally created on the drums and guitars, and then we send music over to jon and he starts to write
the vocals, and then we just send the music back and forth to get the songs to a finished stage.
What are your musical influences in your opinion?
when i was growing up i had many influences from ministry to nine inch nails to slayer etc...
We'd like to know something about your background in making music. How did you learn to play, what are your experiences and
which musicians are your main technical influence?
i am self taught and started playing drums when i was 15, and really taught myself through the music i would isten
to and would try and play it myself and buildon it, my unfluences were dave lombardo, pete sandoval, stewart copeland.
What do you think: How will Arkaea sound like in let's say five years? Is there a masterplan?
it is hard to say what the band will sound like in 5 years, but i would guess that it would have a lot of the same
ingredients that we have put into our music so far and we will build on that.
Please name some lately released CDs that you like to listen to at home.
i have been listening to the new u2 record, i just got the new devildriver record.
Do you still watch other bands play? Have there been some shows lately that impressed you?
i dont go to shows too often, as i am usually busy with my other businesses, but the last show i went to was to see
lamb of god, and they were amazing.
What makes the difference between Arkaea and other metal bands?
we have a very specific writing in our music and we have our own sound that we have been pioneering for along time,
so i guess the easiest way to answer that would be our sound and musical style.
We'd like to know something about the underground in your hometown. Are you still in touch? And if so: Where do you hang out? Are
there some yet unknown bands that you like?
unfortunately since i dont go out to shows too often, i am very out of the touch with the underground metal scnene.
What about the Metal Scene in general? Do you know some bands, and if so, is there friendship, rivalry or more or less nothing special?
i know a tonf of bands int hemetal scene, definitely alot of friendships, no rivalry's that i know of, atleast that i know about.
How important is it for you to play live on stage?
it is important from a promotional standpoint, but i definitely enjoy playing live.
Are there still some bands that you would die to play with?
yeah sure, i would love t play with killswitch enggage, lamb of god, slayer, just to name a few.
Please tell us something about further Live activities.
our booking agent is looking at tours at the moment, and we dont have anything confirmed just yet. but we will
mentioning touring dates as they are confirmed, we will hve that news on our web sites and at www.arkaea.com
Still three questions to go. What do you think of Metal web magazins?
it is a great way to get news to people in a faster way and since it is on the eb, it is worldwide.
Is there something that you have never been asked but always have been eager to say?
i cant think of anything that i need to say that i am not being asked about.
We are looking forward seeing you in Germany. Best whishes to you all. Any last words?
we look forward to touring in germany, i just want to thank your readers for taking the time to read this interview and i
look forward to getting out there to support the arkaea record.
