Hellish War - Metal Still Burns

Hi there. Some of our readers may never have heard about you. So please give us a short briefing in the band's biography first. 0
Well, first of all. Hi everybody! Hellish War really begun in 1995 with our guitarrist Vulcano (he still is the only original member from that period of the band). It started as a power trio and evoluted to a five piece band. Our first recording was a demo tape called “The Sign”, it was released in 1997. Then after 5 years struggling for a record deal we signed with a Brazilian label and released our first album “Defender Of Metal” in 2001. Then after all the problems we had in the past years we released our second album “Heroes Of Tomorrow” in 2008. In that gap of seven years we just been touring around Brazil and shared the stage with major acts like Saxon, UDO, Shaman, etc.
We have a Re-Release of "Hellish War" on Pure Steel Records. What is behind this issue?
We were sending our material to some metal labels in Europe, USA, Japan and even in Brazil. In the middle of this whole thing we got in contact with Pure Steel Records, showed them our two albums and they really enjoyed our music and we became friends since then. Actually I believe they already knew or have heard of the band at the time. After a while they contact us back showing a huge interest to re-release “Defender Of Metal” by PSR. We had some negotiation after that and convinced them to re-release our both albums. It would be a great publicity for the band in European ground. At the same time PSR recognized it was a good idea too and decided to re-release it as a double pack release. Seeing it now, it really was an excellent idea as we're still seeing the results of this release. And most of the results have real high numbers. (laughs)
Let's think a little bit about the songs. My favourite is "Die For Glory". Can you tell us something about this song and it's history?
Well, our guitarist Vulcano just came up with the whole idea of the melodies and the riffs of the music. He showed the idea to all of us in the band and we started to give life to the music. And then Vulcano, Hammer and myself wrote the lyrics together. This song is totally based on the “Braveheart” movie. And we tried to show the whole vibe of the movie's history, about how they ripped Willian Wallace's heart out when they killed his only beliefs and love. And about what he came to be because of this tragic event in his life. From the ashes rises the warrior as say the bridge of the song. In real life is the same. We are been put to test every single day. At any moment everything we believe can crumble down and our dreams can be washed away. But that's life and we have to face it, like it or not.
And what about "Awaken"?
Most of the harmonies in this one are actually ideas from “Defender Of Metal” songwriting sessions. When we were getting into the writing for “Heroes Of Tomorrow”, Vulcano remembered the riff and some two or three pieces from the original idea and we just went from that. As for the lyrics I wrote it along with Roger Hammer. We were kind in the same vibe when we wrote it. Cause we've been through a lot of shit in this life and the lyrics are about how you can handle your day to day problems, you just need to believe in yourself, believe you can do it, you can win. You just have to worth the life you have and live it with no limits. Do what you want as long you're not harming any one. Live and be happy, learn from life. Be strong. Follow your dreams.
Which one is YOUR favorite song from the album and why?
I'll say for the whole band. Son Of The King. We all really enjoy this song and it's our favorite. As for me I really enjoy the title track because of its vibe. The whole song for me sounds different than the rest of the album. There's the acoustic beginning then the orchestra in the middle, it's a very atmospheric song. And the chorus, it really still shivers down my spine when I hear it.
Are there some lyrics that are special to you? Tell us something about them.
Yes, there are. “Reasons”, because it's a very personal lyric to me. I wrote about some troubles I was going through at the time and went through some wrong and evil ways. Of course most of the lyric is a metaphor, because I've never pulled a knife to anyone (laughs). But I really did some bad things. I was really lost at the time and my world was really collapsing. But I managed to get myself out of the hole was into and that's why it's a very special lyric to me. When I read it now I see how miserable I was and how happy I'm now. I learn a lot from that. I don't wanna sound like a fucking preacher here. People knows what's wrong or right. It's up to you to decide witch path you will take. So think twice before doing something stupid to your life.
How would you describe your music?
Hellish War's music is pure heavy metal. If you get together Iron Maiden, Running Wild, Judas Priest, Grave Digger, Helloween and mixed them together in a fucking blender then you will have Hellish War's music. Of course we have our own musical identity. So if you are curious enough check out our myspace and take your own conclusions. (laughs)
What are your musical influences in your opinion?
Our main influences are bands from the 80's era. Bands like Saxon, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, W.A.S.P., Running Wild, Grave Digger, Helloween, Manowar, etc. We really enjoy this period of the heavy metal music.
What was your aim when you started making music? How far is it still, and how will you get there?
Well, my aim was and still is to hang around with my friends and do some music and if I could ever earn some money from it, it would be perfect. I got into the music because I really enjoyed it and I still does. I believe that music is above all about friendship, course you can do it alone but I see no fun in that at all. I'd rather be with my friends, drink a couple of beers and do some music. I like to believe I've been as far as I've imagined. But of course we want more and we will get there for sure. We just have to be honest with ourselves and continue with the music we do. I don't wanna sound arrogant or something like that. But we grow a lot world wide last year as a band and I believe that for the next two years we're going get even bigger in the musical scene. And for the near future we will reach our top goal which is to earn a living from our music. Today we still need to have regular jobs and that's a pain in the ass, because we don't have the necessary time or the time we'd like to have and be only musicians.
Is there anything you would do in a different way if you could start it all over again?
No, I'd not change a single thing along the way we've been through.
What makes the difference between Hellish War and other Metal bands?
I believe that is the honesty we have. We do it because we like it and people see that. When you do something you don't like, that is clear your face, in your acts, you know. But when you do something only 'cause of the passion to do it, people believes in you. Money is good of course but I'd rather live happy and poor than rich and miserable, if you know what I mean. But we do it for passion and people recognize that attitude and respects you. Sometimes even when they don't like our music, they still respect us.
Is Brazil a good place to live as a Metal musician?
No, not a good place at all (laughs). It's very hard to make a living from metal music in Brazil, you have to come from the world to Brazil and not the contrary. All the bands that really did something world wide went through this path. See examples like Sepultura, Angra and Krisiun. We make a stand in Brazil but when we did our first European tour, oh man, it really was an eye opener thing. We saw all the weak points we have in Brazil as a metal scene. We have not reached our goal yet because the country we still live in. Maybe if we all moved over to Europe, who knows. But now is still not the right time for that 'cause we all have our lives here, we need the band to grow a little more in European ground than if we need we will be able maybe for moving over there.
What about the Metal Scene in your country in general? Do you know some bands, and if so, is there friendship, rivalry or more or less nothing special?
We have lot of good bands. Very professional bands. But our metal scene is too discriminated by the Brazilian people. We've crazy fans, awesome bands but we don't have good places to do a show for example. We have a lot of people who work for a better metal scene in here but we don't have the necessary support from the major labels and the musical industry.
How important is it for you to play live on stage?
I think the most important part of the music business is to play live shows, at least for us it really is. There's no better feeling than the energy you feel from the crowd and the speakers real loud almost blowing your years, then you look to the fellows playing along with you at the same stage, you know, and you know they are enjoying as much as you, and the crowd feels the same thing back to them. It's adrenalin, it gives a real rush. We really enjoy live performances. Is where we are at our best. We give our 110% and then we're dead, but that is it. (laughs)
Please describe your audience!
Our audience is the very passionate kind. They sing along with the songs and are headbanging most of the time, when they're not headbanging they're paying attention to the way we play the songs. I think that a band's audience is a reflection of the band's acting on stage. Our show is very intense and we play with such passion that people come along with us and we become one, band and audience. The vibe and the adrenalin they send to us on stage we send back to them.
Please tell us something about your future plans.
We're finishing the mixing of a live album which we recorded in Germany. To be more specifically we recorded it in Datteln at Razoblade Festival '09. We have already chosen the tracks that are gonna be on it. We're finishing the cover and the booklet, so I believe it will be release till June or July. Next month we are getting our asses back into rehearsal room and will start the writing of our third album. We have 4 songs almost ready. We are planning to finish the writing in August this year and then lock ourselves in the studio for the recordings. If everything goes as plan we will release it in the end of 2010 or beginning of next year.
What do you expect of the ...?
.....future. Well, I expect lots of health to all of us. And lots of money of course (laughs)
We are looking forward seeing you in Germany. Best whishes to you all. Any finishing words?
Well, we hope to get back to Germany real soon. We had an amazing time there during our European tour last year. German crowd really kicks ass. And we have made a lot of German friends we hope to see again and have a couple of beers. Well, that's it, I'd like to thank you for the opportunity and I also like to deliver a message to our friends from Custard. Man, this band rocks!!. We had the chance to share the stage with them. So Chris, Olli, Magga and Oscar. I know that Magga is not playing with them anymore, but he stills a good friend. So cheers and good luck mates!!! To finish the interview I'd like to thank all of our German fans. You guys rock big time. See you on the road. Metal Still Burns!!!
