SwampDaWamp - Lyrics Are Real Life!

First of all congratulations to an excellent Southernrock Record.
David Lee: Thank you very much! We had a great time making this record, and I think it shows when you listen to it – it’s a “feel good” record.

For our readers, can you tell us a little bit about the history of SwampDaWamp as there’s not much known about the facts even in the internet.
David Lee: Well, Gig (Michaels) and I got together around 6 years ago via a musicians’ search engine, and quickly discovered a common ground not only in our approach to music and songwriting, but also in our personal philosophies. Gig had about an album’s worth of material in various stages of development, and I set out to find the right musicians that could impart our vision of what the songs should be according to their playing styles. There have been some member changes over the years, but the current line-up has been in place for around 3 years. It’s really a great band, both musically and personally – we are like 6 brothers, we all get along great and have a blast playing music for a living!

This is your second full record so far. Tell us a bit about its development. Because there’re some changes compared to the first record and that’s not only the changed line-up.
David Lee: On this record, the songwriting was much more of a band effort, with everyone having input on the songs. This was just not possible on the first record, as the songs were written before the band was actually put together. I feel that this record is more representative of the personality of SwampDaWamp as a whole. We also had different producers on this record, which contributed as much to the evolution of sound as much as the changed line-up. In many ways, “Rock This Country” could be considered our first record together.

There’re a lot of Countrymusic vibes to find in most of the tracks on “Rock This Country”. It reminds me a lot of the new Lynyrd Skynyrd record “God & Guns” which is also very based in Countrymusic.
David Lee: Wow, what a great compliment! You know, I think a lot of that is in our backgrounds – we’re both Southern bands, not to mention being Skynyrd fans forever, so our styles are sometimes similar. I also think this record is like a melting pot of all our influences, from Rock to Jazz to Country, and even some R & B, which is true for a lot of bands in the genre.

Like most southernrock bands you deal a lot with the lyrics. You sing about real life, truckers and farmers and you’re telling a lot about the American Way of Life. What is life about for you and the band?
David Lee: Well, it’s actually a lot like the lyrics themselves. Because so many of our lyrics are “real life”, it comes from observing what’s going on in our everyday lives. It’s a way of telling stories of normal everyday occurrences in a different light. We’re really just a bunch a regular guys with strong family values that also like to party, and who just happen to be musicians.

Can you tell about the songs, the lyrics and who came up with what idea?
David Lee: With the exception of “Lady” and “Stoned”, which were submitted by outside writers, the entire band had a hand in each song, to varying degrees. Typically, the “formula” varies on each song – someone will come up with an idea for a riff or a vocal hook, and another member (or members) may pick it up from there, adding their own influences. Once we have a “shell” for a song, we experiment with different arrangements, lyrics and instrumentation until we end up with what we believe is the best version of the song. Sometimes this is done in writing sessions or in pre-production, but sometimes we’ll go into the recording studio with half a song, and complete it there.

Are there any plans for a tour in Europe especially in Germany of course? A great combination would be Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and SwampDaWamp.
David Lee: I couldn’t agree more! Actually we are currently working with a promoter in Europe who is working on a tour for us this summer or fall. We’ve had a great reception in Europe, particularly in Germany, and can’t wait to come over and make new friends and get you SWAMPED!

Any last words for our readers?
David Lee: As always, thank you so much for your support! We couldn’t do what we do without the belief and support of our fans, who have been incredible, in The States and Europe as well. We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions and a lot of success for your future plans.
