Hi there. Congratulations to your great new album. Please describe the reactions to the CD so far.
Hey! Thanks for your words! For the moment the reactions are pretty cool, Clockwork is having awesome reviews in all European media, we are very happy to see this and how people is headbanging with this album! Hell yeah!!
Some of our readers may never have heard about you. Please give us a short briefing in the band's biography and the milestones of your career up to now?
The band was born in 2000 in the small Spanish city of Albacete, wich has no infrastructures for Heavy Metal but it’s buzzing with lots of Metal bands! After a little change in the lineup and two independent albums (Evil Unleashed 2006 and Give ‘Em War 2007) finally we signed to Century Media to spread our music all around the world! We’ve worked very hard because Spain is not use to have Thrash Metal bands and singing in English so it was very hard to gain a foothold in the Spanish Metal scene, but when we released Give ‘Em War it began to change and Angelus Apatrida was playing in the most important Metal festivals of the country and the name of the band was consolidated as one of the biggest Metal acts in Spain!
Let's talk about your new CD. Please describe your development from your self-released albums to "Clockwork".
Spanish record labels rarely sign young bands which are not playing what Spanish Metalheads are use to see in Spain, you know traditional Heavy or Power Metal and always singing in Spanish language… so we decided to do it by our own and self finance our career. Our two first albums worked very well and let the band play in lots of shows and many important festivals but it was very difficult to pass frontiers and start working in the rest of Europe but underground ways. We always work in the same way for a new album but with Clockwork obviously we had the support of a label such as big as Century Media so you can imagine both production and resources for this album grew up greatly. We have worked the hardest for Clockwork and we are very happy with the final sound, of course we have done our best work ever!
My favorite is "Of Men And Tyrants". Can you tell us something about this song and it's history?
It’s one of my faves too! In this song we wanted to capture some social problems in Spain and many other countries where a dictatorship ruled relatively a short time ago. We still have a delay in many cultural terms because of Franco’s dictatorship and many of our actual politicians mainly in the righty and conservative parties are descendants or even expoliticians of Franco. We are not a political band, we hate politics, but we just wanted to write about something that is still fucking the society 35 years after transition. There are still a lot of communal graves in Spain with corpses of people who fought in the civil war against fascists, they were killed and left like animals (like famous poet Lorca) and a spanish judge wanted to exhume it and let families bury their relatives with dignity some months ago, and what happen was that righties parties condemn him and nowadays this judge is suspended and awaiting for his own judgment… and families still can’t bury their relatives… this is “our democracy” man….
And what about "Into The Storm"?
This song is the second part of a story which first part is a song from our previous release called “The Calm”. It talks about someone who is beaten to death and the Devil brings him a second chance for revenge hahahaha, something that everybody wants to do when someone is fucking you hahaha, its a metaphoric song for let people make his own story.
Is there a favorite song of yours from the album? If so: Which one and why? If not: Which one gets the most attention in Live concerts?
Uff its very difficult to choose a favorite song of this album, we really love all of them! For the moment we are playing some songs alive like Of Men And Tyrants (people go really crazy with this one!), Clockwork or One Side One War. For the upcoming shows we are gonna set the most of the Clockwork songs in the set list so let’s see how Metalheads react to this songs! I think Blast Off and Legally Brainwashed will be another two motherfucking kick in the ass in the shows!!
Are there some lyrics that are special to you? Tell us something about them.
All lyrics have something special. It’s the meaning of the song and what we want to transmit alongside music. That’s our way of scape for all rage we have by many things or just something we want to share with the audience so each lyric has something special for us.
How would you describe your music and What are your musical influences in your opinion?
We are just a Metal band playing hard and fast! Our main influences come from NWOBHM specially Iron Maiden, Bay Area and European Thrash Metal, Hardcore, Death Metal… People say Angelus Apatrida is a kind of mix between Testament, Megadeth and Pantera, but there are a lot of other influences that make at our own point something original for a new Thrash Metal band.
Your band name is very special, but it is quite hard to remember. What does it mean for you and how did you come up with it?
Hahahaha yeah our name is the less commercial name ever! It’s a mix of Latin and Spanish language, in English would be something like stateless or renegade angels. To be honest I would say that at the beginning we didn’t like the name but it came with a great logo and we just let pass time while Spanish Metalheads just call us “Angelus”. But the band grew up and we just get used to this name, we are proud of it and I think it’s something that marks the difference, a Thrash Metal band with this kind of name… maybe it’s hard to remember but there are a lot of other bands with stranger names!
At the end of your career: Which statement would you like to read about your band in the great history book of Heavy Metal?
Well I hope to be in the end of our career in a lots of year’s time! Would be great to be remembered as the band that opened the frontiers in Spain and the first in became an international spanish Metal band touring and releasing tons of great albums!
What makes the difference between Angelus Apatrida and other next generation Thrash and Speed Metal bands?
Well Angelus Apatrida is one of the last bands to come into this new generation of Thrash Metal bands, I think all these new awesome bands are different between themselves and that’s the main difference with the golden age of Thrash Metal, I think we all come up with new influences and fresh blood, Angelus Apatrida mix new influences to play classic Thrash Metal and maybe this mix can be the main difference, but as I told you I think all new bands are different themselves, and it’s very cool!!
What is your opinion of the general situation in today's Heavy Metal?
I think the scene is rising again compared it to 10 years before, for the moment we just toured in Spain and sometimes in Portugal and France so we don’t know very well whats the situation in the rest of Europe although there are lots of new bands recording incredible albums! In Spain there are more Heavy Metal fans than some years ago specially children are back again with their longhair, shirts and patches! And the old great bands are recording again awesome songs! So I think we are living another golden age for Heavy Metal!
Is Spain a good place to live as musicians who play aggressive Metal?
Spain is waking up and non-typical Metal bands are getting success, proof of it was the signing with Century Media and other bands are starting to work with other great labels. It’s very difficult to live as musicians nowadays if you don’t play the typical Metal of the Spanish main stream bands like Warcry or Saratoga, and bands like us have to open frontiers but I think this is changing and in a couple of years I will say that yeah, Spain is a good place to live as musician!
How important is it for you to play live on stage?
Its the most important thing for us dude! I think it is the very essence of a band, nowadays everybody can record an awesome album with incredible production, but if you can’t be best on stage you are dead. And I think that’s the best point of Angelus Apatrida, on stage we are 200% than in studio, just come to our shows!
Please describe your audience!
Every year that pass we see new fans and people coming to our shows, as we play aggressive and fast music you can see classic Metalheads, new Metalheads, Punks, Hardcores… Angelus Apatrida play a music that can be joined for any Metalhead or just for people who like aggressive or fast music. The most difference is on new Metalheads, there are more and more children and young people on each show in the front row Thrashing and smashing hahaha, it’s amazing!!
What about further Live activities?
We are this summer playing some great festivals here in Spain and Portugal, and we are looking forward to start our first European tour, we are gonna tour all Europe alongside Skeletonwitch and Warbringer in August/September and we can’t wait for it!! This tour is about 21 dates and we hope to see you in any date in Germany or near, you won’t be disappointed!
Is there a question left that you would like to answer? And what is the answer?
Hahahaha I don’t know man, I think we’ve already talked about a lot of things, but if you like football I would say I wish you luck with Germany, I hope to see a good match Spain-Germany in semifinals (if both come to semifinals) and I won’t be sad if you defeat Spain, as Germany is one of my favorite teams!
We are looking forward to seeing you in Germany. Best wishes to you all. Any finishing words?
We are looking forward too! Thank you so much for your time, we hope you enjoy our new album Clockwork and come to see us alive, SALUD!
