You are a new band and still relatively unknown in Europe. Say us please a little more about the Band!
Hello! We are three individuals that live in Ontario, Canada. Finnr's Cane began in 2008 as a creative outlet for The Bard (guitars, vocals) and The Peasant (drums). Shortly after the inception of the band The Slave (synth, cello) joined to complete the line-up.
What kind of music is your influence for your Music and what have they inspired to play Black Metal?
There are many musical influences, both in metal and non-metal genres. Bands like Ulver and Emperor could be considered direct influences for wanting to play a heavy type of music, but also folk, jazz and ambient artists inspire us to incorporate those stylistic elements as well.
We come now to your album “Wanderlust”. The Album has got good critics, what is not so bad for an debut. How satisfied are you self with this work?
Yes we are very satisfied with our debut album. The songs were recorded to see what could come of this project with few expectations for releasing them on a wide scale. In terms of the songs and sound of the album, it was recorded by The Bard in his small studio. This allowed much freedom for experimentation and really allowed us to get the sonic atmosphere that we desired.
The title "Wanderlust" is the English Word for the German "Fernweh". Where does the journey on this album?
Wanderlust is such an interesting word to me. It evokes images of travel, self-discovery, the passing of time and the natural world. These types of themes are important to us as individuals and seem to often be overlooked in the industrial societies that we live in. Thus the journey is constant through our entire lives if we our senses are aware.
They told you that your music is created not through aware composition, but rather by an intuitive process of improvisation. For me but has that all structures. Explain to me!
Yes, the means of creating songs is a little different for this band. For Wanderlust, the songs were born out of improvised sessions of drums and guitar. This allowed a lot of freedom to let the songs unfold without restriction. All of these sessions were recorded and the material was sifted through and worked into more cohesive compositions. It's a very exciting way to write music, and I find myself surprised at how well it works.
I noticed that the vocals mixed very to the background ( What I find very good ). Was this intentional or is it coincidence?
I'm glad you liked it, as it was definitely intentional. The vocals are used more like an instrument compared to the feature point of the songs, and it felt much more natural to have them mixed to a low volume.
The album is a re-release what released last year over the Russian Label “ Frost Scald Records”. What had moves you to change the label and how are her to come to Prophecy?
Finnr's Cane was lucky enough to be contacted by Prophecy Productions some months after the initial release of Wanderlust. Being big fans of the label, we decided that their offer was something we had to pursue. Our previous agreement with Frostscald Records was simply a one-time distrubution deal, which meant that we were free to negotiate the rights of those songs with Prophecy. Needless to say we are very pleased and excited to be on the label's roster.
When can we see you live on stage here in Germany or Europe?
Haha, it's not something that seems to be in the immediate future, but we would love to venture across the Atlantic sometime.
What is your plan for the future? Are you working already at new material and can we look forward to a new album?
Yes, we have created an album's worth of compositions already and will continue to record over the next months. The results are encouraging so far, I would say that this album will be more diverse than Wanderlust .
At the end of the interview times a slightly different question. If you give me your mp3 player, which music I would find?
Excellent question. My mp3 player is not with me at the exact moment, but I would guess that the following artists are on there: Alcest, Alice In Chains, Agalloch, Barn Burner, Baroness, Blind Guardian, Bon Iver, Bruce Springsteen, Clutch, Emperor, In Flames, Isis, Jandek, Katatonia, Lantlos, Moonsorrow, Opeth, Propagandhi, Shining, Smashing Pumpkins, Strapping Young Lad, Tenhi, Ulver, Wolves in the Throne Room, . Mixed in are some local/independent artists from our part of Canada.
Last but not least, say any words too our users!
Enjoy the summer, find joy in the simple pleasures of life! Thank you very much for this interview.
Gladly, I thank you for the interview and wish you all the best for the future!
